Galliford Try Case Study

Development of Choose the Safe Path™ training solution to deliver critical health and safety messages

GatewayHSW have collaborated with Galliford Try to develop and deliver a bespoke interactive training programme with a new exciting approach that provided a ‘One Stop Shop’ where everything needed to deliver effective training is available in one place with the flexibility to access it at any time and from anywhere.
This exciting innovative training solution was subsequently named Choose the Safe Path™

The Original Brief

In August 2021, Galliford Try gathered accident data and root cause analysis outputs across the business and found that falling objects was found to be a potential risk within the organisation and therefore a prevention of falling objects was a priority and an impactful training solution was necessary.
The specific training objectives of Galliford Try were outlined as:

  • A reduction of falling object incidents
  • Delivery of impactful critical safety messages using engaging, interactive and innovative media
  • Meaningful data to evaluate impact on safety

The Solution

In order to enhance the learning experience and reach a higher level of compliance and performance, GatewayHSW developed a unique training solution to raise awareness and improve safety performance, in this case around the prevention of falling objects.  The training solution goes beyond standard training options and allows a learner to see a single scenario and examine the multiple decision points preceding an incident and choose their own path, where the correct choices will turn an incident into a non-incident.
Choose the Safe Path™ is a ground-breaking training concept, that creates enhanced audience engagement and interaction via the user/choice driven platform as you are involved in the decision making and actively see the outcomes of your decisions as they are played out on screen.

The training platform also contains additional learning material to facilitate discussions around any choices made and outcomes observed.  The training platform provides a ‘one-stop shop’ for all elements needed to successfully facilitate and deliver critical safety messages/sessions which includes:

  • Interactive video clips
  • Access to a trainers’ tutorial
  • Access to play (and replay) the interactive video – video optimisation streaming content
  • Facility to record attendance at briefing sessions via a smartphone interface
  • Supporting materials to utilise and download for activities within specific briefing sessions e.g. managers, supervisors
  • Knowledge-based assessment for comprehension check
  • QR codes for training delivery feedback collation
  • Access to analytics and reports of usage of the platform in real time

Positive Outcomes

The interactive training package with the following objectives was launched in January 2022.
118 sessions were delivered between January and December 2022 to Galliford Try employees, contractors and others, including designers and clients.  Training engagement has been extremely positive which has subsequently led to an improvement in how planned works, involving work at height and falling objects risks, were designed and executed, leading to a clear reduction in falling objects incidents.

Assessment data at the conclusion of the training sessions showed that those undertaking the training had a clear understanding of the training objectives and the critical safety messages, providing an indication of the effectiveness of this interactive training solution.

Aside from the extremely positive feedback from the training sessions, Galliford Try also noted a near 50% reduction in falling object incidents numbers following the introduction of Choose the Safe Path™.

This training solution provides data to evaluate effectiveness of the sessions collating the number and location of training sessions and attendees, with incidents.  This data has shown that no-one who has attended these sessions has subsequently been involved in a falling objects incident.

The training programme has demonstrated how effective the sessions have been, proving that top-down engagement, planning through to execution can and was positively influenced – not only in relation to falling objects, but the entire planning element across multiple trades.

Impact on Incident Rates in 2022

Following a review of Company data, there has been a near 50% reduction in falling object incidents since the introduction of the Choose the Safe Path™ training solution.  Furthermore, no-one who has attended these sessions were subsequently involved in a falling objects incident.  This supports the positive impact such a training can make in transferring learning to the workplace.

We are very pleased with the reaction to the Choose the Safe Path™ module.  We saw this as a good opportunity to reinforce the importance of considering the risk of falling objects specifically within the design and planning of works, as we challenge our teams to continually ‘move to the left’, tackling risks way before they present during the construction phase of a project.  As always, the GatewayHSW team bring new impactful tools to help us promote high standards of health and safety across our business.
